Located in Cass County in Southwestern Michigan, Marcellus is a historic village known for the numerous activities and festival it hosts every summer.
The first person to settle in Marcellus was John Bair, in 1832. Within five years, there were over 50 people living in the town. As the town began to grow, the residents were set on naming it Cambria, but could not because there was already a town in Michigan by the same name. Marcellus was chosen by Representative Judge Littlejohn, after the Roman Emperor Flavius Marcellus. On June 16, 1843, the village was officially named, although Marcellus was not officially incorporated until 1879.
Marcellus has two schools, both which fall under the umbrella of the Marcellus Community Schools. The Marcellus Elementary School serves students in grades K-5, and Marcellus High School serves grades 6-12. U.S. Route 12, stretching from Detroit to New Buffalo, runs through Cass County, providing easy transit from Marcellus across the state.
Nearby Berrien County is home to a number of county parks, as well as resorts and beaches. There are dozens of lakes located within driving distance of Marcellus, making it a perfect place for outdoor activities year round. Paw Paw Lake, in adjacent Berrien County, is a popular spot for fishing and boating in the summer, and ice fishing in the winter.
