Bangor

Located between Kalamazoo and South Haven, Bangor is a small community brimming with culture and an overwhelming sense of hometown pride. Bangor is only a short drive from Lake Michigan, and offers many amenities of a lakeside town at a good value.

When it was founded in 1834, the city of Bangor was originally a part of Bangor Township. In 1853, it was incorporated by The Van Buren County Board with the name Marion. This name, however, was extremely unpopular with residents, and it was decided the township would be named Bangor, and the name has remained ever since.

Bangor is served by the Bangor Public School district, which is comprised of an elementary school, middle school, and high school. The Bangor School District also has an Adult Education building. Bangor is serviced by Amtrak’s Pere Marquette line, which leaves daily in the morning, offering convenient travel for those who wish to visit Chicago.

Bangor is surrounded by pristine nature sites, which are enjoyed by its residents. The Black River, home to abundant wildlife, runs through the heart of the town, and rare wildflowers are found on the outskirts of town. The Bangor Grain Elevator is a local landmark, but the landmark with the most presence in Bangor is the Freestone Pickle Company, often providing an aromatic smell of pickles in the air.
