Rochester Hills is the farthest outlying city in the Detroit metro area. Its downtown area is full of amenities, from restaurants and coffee shops to unique boutiques and ice cream parlors. During the winter, downtown buildings are illuminated for the Big, Bright Light Show, creating a vibrant nighttime dining and bar scene. There are many older Tudor-style homes throughout the city, while new planned development is happening on former farmland outside of the downtown area. Rochester Hills is home to Oakland University, the second largest institution of higher learning in the Detroit region.
