Lake Station

Located in Northwest Indiana, just miles from Lake Michigan, Lake Station is known as the “crossroads of America” due to its convenient location just off Interstate 80/94. In recent years, the city has made large infrastructure and revitalization investments, ensuring that Lake Station is well poised for future growth.

Lake Station was first settled as an early depot stop on the Michigan Central Railroad, in the mid-1800s. The town was platted in 1852, and was named Lake Station by one of its early settlers, George Earle. In 1908, the town had its name changed to East Gary, in an attempt to create a suburban community for executives from the US Steel plant in Gary. However, as Gary struggled in the middle of the 20th century, Lake Station reverted to its original name, and has remained that since 1977.

Although a small portion of the community is served by the River Forest Community School Corporation, the majority of the town is served by Lake Station Community Schools. The district consists of five schools: three elementary schools, a 6th grade school, and a combined junior/senior high school. There are two private schools located in Lake Station: Liberty Baptist and St. Francis Xavier. In addition to an ideal location just off Interstate 80/94, residents of Lake Station have easy access to Interstates 65 and 90, while air travel is accessible at either of the Chicago area airports, as well as the Gary/Chicago International Airport.

Lake Station is home to nearly a dozen parks, which contain a number of athletic fields, playground equipment, walking trails, and a number of popular fishing spots. Lake Station is home to a number of popular events, including Fuzz Follies, a car show that has taken place in Riverview Park yearly for over 30 years. The Heritage Days Festival, held in June, and Septemberfest, held Labor Day weekend, are two of the newer events in Lake Station, but are becoming increasingly popular with residents.
