Edwardsburg

Located in Cass County in Southwestern Michigan and situated on just over one square mile, Edwardsburg is a village located amidst the rolling fields of Michigan’s countryside.

The area surrounding Edwardsburg was not heavily forested, like many nearby areas of Michigan. This led to extremely fertile soil and rapid population growth in the 19th century. Originally an area formerly known as Beardsley’s Prairie, Edwardsburg was established in 1828, although it was not incorporated as a village until 1911.

The Edwardsburg community is served by the Edwardsburg Public School District. The district is made up of five school buildings, as well as a Performing Arts Center and various athletic fields. In addition to the performing arts and sports based extracurricular activities offered by the district, the school also has a marching band. Michigan State Road 62 and U.S. 12 run through Edwardsburg, as do the Canadian National railroad tracks. Amtrak service is available daily from Niles, and commercial air travel is accessible from the South Bend Regional Airport.

Cass County is a popular destination for summer vacationers, thanks in part to its plentiful lakes, which make it popular for fishing year round and boating in the winter. It is also home to a number of historic buildings, including some of the first settlements by Europeans in the Midwest. Extremely proud of the assistance the area provided in freeing slaves via the Underground Railroad, there is a plaque that memorializes this in nearby Vandalia.
