For more than a century, the Greenwood community was a collection of houses built around a schoolhouse and a general store established in the 1800s. Today, this historic pocket in McHenry County is an incorporated village of over 300 residents.
Named for its verdant oak tree groves, Greenwood features a combination of single-family homes as well as old farmhouses on expansive parcels of land. A small business district can be found along Greenwood Road, which runs through the village.
Greenwood is also home to Galt Airport, which is located in the middle of a corn field and features a variety of hangars for those with private aircraft. A well-known gathering place for local aviators, Galt's grounds have a stocked fishing pond, fire pit, and trails for members. An extensive flight training program is also available for those interested in obtaining a pilot's license, and aircraft are available to rent.
