Austin is one of Chicago’s largest communities, stretching from Garfield Park on the east to Oak Park on the west.
The west side community is made up of beautiful parks, historic architecture and four distinct neighborhoods: Galewood, The Island, North Austin and South Austin. South Austin is the largest of the four. It is home to numerous historic buildings, including six landmarks on the National Register of Historic Places, and seven buildings that have Chicago landmark status. Homes in the area include vintage brick walk-ups, courtyard buildings and bungalows, as well as those with more modern designs.
Residents enjoy Austin’s tight-knit, active community, as well as parks such as Columbus Park, a 135-acre National Historic Landmark that was designed by famed landscape architect Jens Jensen. Austin Town Hall Park and Cultural Center offer residents ample recreational activities and has a fieldhouse, indoor swimming pool, gymnasium and fitness center. The park also has a basketball court and playground.
Two stations on the Milwaukee District West Line provide access to downtown Chicago and the western suburbs.
